The Eight Blue Bottles That Changed Everything

I was skeptical in the way that anyone trained to trust institutional authority is skeptical of anything outside it.

I had spent my career in business. I understood evidence hierarchies. I understood the difference between anecdote and data. And I had just survived a near-fatal bleeding event caused by a prescription blood thinner that had no antidote.

A friend sent me eight blue bottles. I did not know what they were. I did not ask many questions. I was in the kind of state where you are willing to try things you would not have considered before.

Within five days I felt something shift that I had not felt in longer than I could remember.

I am careful about how I describe that.

I am not a clinician. I do not make clinical claims. I cannot tell you with certainty what was happening at the cellular level during those five days. I can tell you what I experienced. And I can tell you what four years of subsequent research taught me about why that experience was consistent with what the science increasingly supports.

The intervention I was given worked at the level of redox signalling — the cellular communication system that governs how the body responds to oxidative stress, manages inflammation, and coordinates recovery. It was not a pharmaceutical. It was not a supplement in the conventional sense. It was a signalling molecule that the body already produces, delivered in a form that the body could use.

The research on this class of intervention is substantial and growing. The mechanisms are well-documented. The clinical outcomes, in the hands of practitioners who understand how to use it, are consistent.

What it sent me searching for

That moment led to four years of research into why we resist the very modalities that could help us most. Why the system pushes back. Why patients are left navigating alone in the 29 days between appointments with no clinical support and no between-visit protocol.

I wanted to understand the gap between what the science supports and what the clinical model delivers. I wanted to understand why a holistic nurse in Ottawa knew things about my medication that my prescribing physician had not told me. I wanted to understand what the body actually needs to recover — not manage, not compensate, actually recover — at the cellular level.

That research became my book. *The Healing Divide — Why We Resist Natural and Alternative Healing Modalities.*

And it became the foundation of the work I do today.

What I tell practitioners

When I work with integrative, functional, naturopathic, chiropractic, and hands-on practitioners, I do not lead with my story. I lead with the science. I lead with the clinical framework. I lead with the outcomes their colleagues are seeing.

But when they ask me why I do this work — why someone with a business background spent four years researching cellular biology and clinical practice models — I tell them about the eight blue bottles.

Because that is where it started. And because the practitioners who are doing the most important work in this field often have a moment like that in their own story — a moment where something shifted, where the conventional explanation was insufficient, where the body did something that the standard model could not fully account for.

That moment is not anecdote. It is the beginning of a question. And the question — what actually supports the body's ability to recover at the cellular level — is the most important question in chronic condition care.

I have spent four years trying to answer it. And I am not done yet.
